Cumulative markedness effects and (non-)linearity in phonotactics

چکیده

How do grammars assess the well-formedness of words with multiple phonotactic violations? Certain models predict that as strength restrictions decrease, forms violate should be less acceptable than expected, in a pattern we term super-linear cumulativity. We test this prediction using series Artificial Grammar Learning experiments, which vary number exceptions to patterns artificial languages. find cumulativity is indeed observed conditions weakest restrictions. Strikingly, participants exhibit even when trained language does not contain evidence for it.

patterns and variations in native and non-native interlanguage pragmatic rating: effects of rater training, intercultural proficiency, and self-assessment

although there are studies on pragmatic assessment, to date, literature has been almost silent about native and non-native english raters’ criteria for the assessment of efl learners’ pragmatic performance. focusing on this topic, this study pursued four purposes. the first one was to find criteria for rating the speech acts of apology and refusal in l2 by native and non-native english teachers...

(To appear in Southwest Journal of Linguistics 25.1) Contrast and Markedness in Complex Onset Phonotactics

In many languages that permit coronal laterals to follow labial and velar stops in complex onsets, sequences of a coronal stop followed by a coronal lateral are prohibited. Standard accounts rule out coronal-lateral clusters as an effect of the Obligatory Contour Principle, but this approach cannot explain languages such as Mong Njua and Katu, which neutralize the coronal-velar place contrast b...

Linearity, Non-determinism and Solvability

We study the notion of solvability in the resource calculus, an extension of the λ-calculus modelling resource consumption. Since this calculus is non-deterministic, two different notions of solvability arise, one optimistic (angelical, may) and one pessimistic (demoniac, must). We give a syntactical, operational and logical characterization for the may-solvability and only a partial characteri...

2 Non - linearity Parameter

We study non-Gaussianity induced by a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson with a cosine-type scalar potential. We focus on how the non-Gaussianity is affected when the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson rolls down from near the top of the scalar potential where the deviation from a quadratic potential is large. We find that the resultant non-Gaussianity is similar to that obtained in the quadratic potential...
